“Nice catch, shorty!” my older brother said as the football sailed over my head for the thousandth time.
I was the shortest person in my family. In fact I was the shortest person in my 4th grade class. I was so short that I could look an ant in the eyes. I had always wished that I could be taller. Life would be a lot easier for me.
As I went to search for the football that sailed into our bushes, I noticed a piece of candy wrapped in a golden foil. It had a note that read: "Eat and Grow." I was hungry anyway, so I popped the candy in my mouth. It tasted like a hot fudge sundae wrapped in a layer of chocolate bars. I wished that I had another piece.
As I went into the bathroom, to get ready for dinner, I felt strange tinglings. Then there was a thump. I had to look down to see the mirror. My head was hitting the ceiling. My hands doubled in size. I had to duck to get out of the bathroom.
After navigating my way through the house, I made it outside. I walked towards an old maple tree. I was often teased for not being able to climb it, but with my new height, I easily was able to reach the branches. I even scared a few squirrels as I climbed up.
I started to jump up and down shouting for joy. I saw my brother in his room on the second floor. I stomped over towards the window and knocked. My brother looked at me, and fainted.
Before I knew it, my whole family was outside staring at me. They all were dumbfounded. They didn’t know what to say, except my three year old sister.
“I see your bottom,” she laughed.
I looked and my clothes hadn't grown. I turned as red as a fire engine. My mom had to go into the house to get me a large blanket. I looked like Tarzan.
Soon the news spread, and people gathered to stare at me. They were laughing and taking pictures. I was very embarrassed. I thought it would be so cool to be tall, but
it felt as if I was “the freak” in The Freak Show.
I decided to run away. Now that I was so tall, I could run fast. I made it to the park in less than a minute. As I was about to hide in the wooded section, I heard a boy scream. I went towards him. He was stuck in a tree and his mother was crying.
I took out my hand and gently placed him on the ground. He hugged my ankle and went off with his mother. I sat down on the ground to think. I saw another one of those candies wrapped in a golden foil. It had a note that read: "Eat and Shrink." I didn’t want to be tall anymore, so I ate the candy.
I felt a strange tingling sensation as I started to head for home. As I exited the woods I heard the voice of a
little girl saying, “I can see that boy’s hiney."
My blanket had fallen to the ground.
